The Grand Canyon is 277 miles long, up to 18 miles wide and attains a depth of over a mile. The Colorado River and its tributaries cut channels through layer after layer of rock while the Colorado Plateau was uplifted. The course of the Colorado River was established through the canyon at least 17 million years ago. A lovely by-product of a site-seeing trip to Monument Valley (Michael's 50th birthday present), so although we had been before it was nice to go again. As an extra treat a helicopter flight over the Canyon. We were also lucky enough to arrive just after it had snowed, so whilst it was pretty cold, we experienced some beautiful snow scenes on the way, and at the South Rim.
